The Center for PostNatural History is a storefront museum on Penn Avenue in Garfield, dedicated to the collection and exhibition of life-forms that have been intentionally and heritably altered by humans through domestication, selective breeding or genetic engineering. Founded in 2008 by artist Richard Pell, an Associate Professor of Art at Carnegie Mellon, and open to the public since March 2012. The front room serves as gallery, gift shop and curator desk; behind a black curtain, the dimly lit Hall of PostNatural History holds specimens narrated through handsets. Alongside the permanent collection the Center runs public exhibitions, workshops and an artist-in-residence program, and produces travelling exhibitions that have shown across Europe, Australia and the United States.
