Join us for an evening celebrating women filmmakers and their work! Meet five Pittsburgh-based women filmmakers who have shown their work nationally and have established careers in film and media. Hear their stories of how they got started, what inspires them, the challenges they faced, and their advice for emerging filmmakers.

Panelist Bios:

Julie Sokolow is an award-winning documentary filmmaker. She directed Woman on Fire, which aired on Starz in 2017 and was praised by IndieWire and the Village Voice. The film celebrates Brooke Guinan, the first openly transgender firefighter in NY. Her first film, Aspie Seeks Love, won Best Documentary at the 2015 Cinequest Film Festival. Sokolow's feature and short films have been acclaimed by The New York Times, Vimeo Staff Picks and Vice, among others. Learn more at www.juliesokolow.com

Kristen Lauth Shaeffer is an Assistant Professor of Film and Digital Technology at Chatham University. Her short films have screened at the New Orleans Film Festival, Athens International Film + Video Festival, NewFilmmakers Los Angeles and New York, Big Muddy Film Festival, and other national and international festivals. She has received grants from The Heinz Endowments, The Pittsburgh Foundation, and Pittsburgh 250 Community Connections for her work as co-creator and executive producer of Greetings from Pittsburgh: Neighborhood Narratives. Njaimeh Njie is a filmmaker, photographer and multimedia producer. Her work has been featured in places like the Huffington Post, Public Source and Jenesis Magazine. She has shown work at Boom Concepts, Silver Eye Center for Photography and Gallery 102, among others. Her photos and videos explore social justice through documenting the everyday experiences of groups who are often pushed to the margins. Learn more at www.njaimehnjie.com

Olivia Vaughn is the producer of the documentary feature Fursonas (2016), a humanistic exploration of the Furry subculture. Fursonas premiered at the 2016 Slamdance Film Festival, won the Spirit of Slamdance award, and toured festivals worldwide. Olivia also produced Echo Torch (2016), which premiered online on Vimeo Staff Picks. She is currently producing the documentary feature Blood Memory, about America’s Indian Adoption Era. Adrienne Wagner is a storyteller who specializes in cinematography and editing. Her short documentary My Grandpa's Garage was featured in film festivals throughout the United States, including the national CINE awards, Indianapolis' Heartland Film Festival, the historic Clinton Theater shorts program in Portland, and at the Indie Oaks film festival in 2017, where it was awarded Best Editing. She recently DPed the feature film Bystander. She currently produces video content for Hello Neighbor, Pittsburgh’s refugee mentorship program, and other nonprofits.
