/////// OCTOBER 7: PLAY THE MUSIC ///////
WORKSHOP (7-9p): KIERNAN LAVEAUX (In Training)
Kiernan Laveaux is a transfeminine conduit from Cleveland, Ohio. Originating as one of the driving forces behind In Training, a long running queer event series founded in Cleveland in 2014, she has made a name for herself through her DJ sets and bookings that reflect the rustbelt environment she was birthed from. Inspired by her peers, the experimentalism and joy found within midwestern electronic music, and the forces that gifted her the name Kiernan Laveaux, she's since embarked on a lifelong journey of exploring rhythms and communicating through the motherbeat. In her workshop, she will be demoing the standard DJ club equipment (mixers, CDJs, turntables) and will be giving advice on how to approach and acquire these tools. She will also be leading a discussion regarding the ethos behind DJing and organizing events, and the experience of approaching organizing in nightlife from the perspective of attempting to create personal autonomy and fluid queer space, as well as a move away from alcohol culture in dance focused spaces. This workshop is open to DJs of all levels and event organizers, or folks aspiring to be either/or/both.
IN THE WEEDS (9p-12a): KINSELLAND (BOOM Concepts)
Kinselland is a vinyl driven sonic experience. Comprised of Mr and Mrs Kinsel, these two are listening to their hearts and trusting their hands to guide the groove. Every set is a trip exploring throwback deep cuts of classical, jazz, hip hop, rhythm and blues, rock, and retro pop.
/////// ABOUT ///////
The WORKSHOP (7:30-8:30pm): we've invited local & visiting artist-educators to take inspiration from electronic music pioneers past & present in choosing a piece of gear from the library’s collection to share with you. They will show you the basics, along with some pro-tips & tricks to achieving that sound that may have been stuck in your playlist or between your ears :)
The PLAYGROUND (7-9pm): CLP offers a special selection from their ever-growing instrument collection that you can play with at your own pace. Explore or perfect your skills in a chill atmosphere, and remember, you can always check out this equipment from the library to take home for more fun!
CLP: The Music Department at the CLP – Main Library has a growing collection of musical instruments and gear available for FREE check out and in-house exploration. The collection includes analog and digital synthesizers, drum machines, guitar pedals, microphones, ukuleles, a Moog Theremin and more.
