CELLULAR CHAOS
Cellular Chaos was founded in the San Francisco Bay Area during the late 2000s by guitar madman Weasel Walter (also known for his work in seminal bands like The Flying Luttenbachers, XBXRX, Burmese, et al., free jazz drum notoriety, and his current role as Lydia Lunch’s current guitarist & musical director) as a severe No Wave-inspired improvisational instrumental combo. The West Coast version didn’t record, but Walter reincarnated the name and concept in 2010, after relocating to Brooklyn, New York. The initial NYC version soldiered regularly through area shows at a regular clip, as well as being filmed for a German music documentary entitled “Parallel Planes” (2011.) In 2012 the band headed in a much more song-oriented direction with the addition of dynamic front-person, Admiral Grey, a multidisciplinary artist known for experimental theater direction and performance, video art, visual art/costume and prop design, writing and performance art. A Brooklyn underground mainstay, Grey had been bassist/founding member of post-punk skronk band Drayton Sawyer Gang, helmed electro-psych Brooklyn supergroup Glass Lamborghini (synths/lead vox), founded art-pop duo Ecstatics (synths/vox), and thrown two-weekend underground music festival Bushwick Blast in 2004. The band began racking up shows across the Eastern half of the United States on multiple tours during 2013 and 2014, backing the release of their eponymous full-length LP/CD (issued on Walter’s ugEXPLODE imprint, October 2013.) In 2015, the group reconfigured itself as a core trio of Grey, Walter and bassist Shayna Dulberger with drum backing tracks to enthusiastic local reception after founding member/ drummer Marc Edwards (Cecil Taylor, David S. Ware, etc.free jazz legend) retired from the fold (his muscular drumming can be heard on the debut as well as the second album “Diamond Teeth Clenched”, released on Skin Graft Records in 2016). Pressing on, Admiral and Weasel hit the road again to promote the second LP with new member Rad Chaines, operating electronic backing tracks and adding live drums. Chad has collaborated with Tony award winning and nominated directors like Rachel Chavkin, Lileana Blain-Cruz, Robert Woodruff, and many others in Off-Broadway Theater as well as touring the world with Amanda Palmer and the Grand-Theft Orchestra. This incarnation completed US and European jaunts before issuing a stopgap EP featuring a harrowing cover of Cardiacs’ epic “Dirty Boy” in 2018. After a New York show in mid 2019, the band members took a break to work on other projects. In 2022 Cellular Chaos was revived adding powerhouse drummer Adam Shead to the fold, and shifting Raines to the full-time bass position. Shead is a renowned Chicago experimental drummer and composer who has performed with Jason Stein, Damon Smith, Roscoe Mitchell, Steve Swell, John Dikeman and many more. The band is currently writing & recording their third album. Cellular Chaos has issued four official music videos to date--three directed by Admiral Grey and one by cult outsider artist Nandor Nevai. --> Overrun Booking
