New monthly incoming!

Close to the Edge is a monthly DJ night celebrating the connection between the sounds of 60s and 70s progressive and psychedelic rock and the culture of sample-based hip-hop.

Since the inception of hip-hop culture in the 1970s, rock has played a foundational role in the instrumental landscape of the genre. From b-boy classics like Babe Ruth’s “The Mexican” and Mountain’s infamous live rendition of “Long Red” to more obscure fare unearthed by successive generations of crate diggers, rock music is deeply woven into the fabric of hip-hop. Acclaimed producers like Madlib, The Alchemist, Large Professor, and many more continue this tradition in the present day- searching for far-out sounds to incorporate into their own sample-based creations.

I’ve long been fascinated with the intersection of these seemingly-disparate musical worlds, with releases like the Frank Zappa-referencing 2021 album River Rats (with Pittsburgh MC @moemawnaedon) serving as a testament to my love of both idioms.

For our inaugural night I’ll be joined by my man @nicerecordwork, one of my longest standing musical partners and one of my favorite DJs period. Pete is a diverse selector with the crates to back it up and I couldn’t ask for a better first guest! Expect treats from around the globe and a gang of classic head nodders.

Join us this Friday at Fat Cat for a gathering of like-minded heads in search of mind expansion and the perfect beat.
