Tomchess is a NYC based multi-instrumentalist for the last 15 years. His main foci have been the Oud (Near Eastern forerunner of the lute) and Ney (Near Eastern reed-end blown flute), composing music that mixes jazz and American musics with Near Eastern and North African elements, featuring a heavy accent on improvisation.

He has played and recorded with some of the heaviest players in the jazz/improvisational scene (Dewey Redman, Butch Morris, Pharoah Sanders, Drew Gress, Ronald Shannon Jackson), as well as Morrocan Sintarist Hassan Hakmoun. His sound encompasses the tonal palette, rhythms, and forms of traditional musics while never losing sight of his American roots and the importance and freedom of improvising. He has performed in Africa, Canada, Holland, India and Italy. Venues inlcude Lincoln Center, The Turkish Embassy, The Pakistani Embassy, the Asian Society, The Natural History Museum, The Metropolitan Museum, The Himalayan Museum of Art and The United Nations among countless other venues in NYC and the United States. He has performed on NPR and PBS. He has played on Grammy Nominated recordings and was nominated for an 2012 Independent Music Award.

"Chess is one of the most fascinating oud players on the scene. His astonishing technique, combined with a real poetic sensitivity and instinctive sympathetic vision of the music constantly conjures unpredictable musical delights. He exudes a vibe of a master who is unconcerned with the trappings of spectacle and showmanship, and concentrates on perfecting his art."
-DBDBD, NYC

"Tomchess is obviously a virtuoso on the oud..."
-Bruce Gallanter, Downtown Music.
