Hot Mass: C Powers, Nick Boyd, Naeem
A late-night club night at Hot Mass featuring DJs C Powers, Nick Boyd, and Naeem on August 29th.
Sorry records affiliate C Powers and label boss Nick Boyd make their respective Hot Mass debuts on August 29th. In support of the night resident Naeem joins in to warm things up and cool things down.
C Powers:
C Powers is a dj from Atlanta GA. Her sound is informed by the djs she grew up listening to on Atlanta radio and the dj vinyl shops (back when they still existed - Rewind and Satellite) she frequented as early as the young age of 11. This inspired her to buy her first decks in 1997, and start making sounds on her family's PC. C Powers’ has since spent the last two decades honing crowd control skills in the foggy clubs of London, fostering queer dancing spaces as the DJ for the House Of Gunt in Savannah GA, and throwing solidarity dance nights in Portland OR.
Cecilia’s sets and releases combine elements of gay camp, anti-sophistication, extended turntable technique, and a sense of juxtaposition molded by a DJ career that has strayed from the traditional “club” spaces. Cecilia has been heavily active in anti-displacement advocacy beginning with organizing rent strikes with undocumented families in LA and currently working to build the tenant movement in Portland. Cecilia became a co-founding member of People’s City Council and then Don’t Evict Portland, and the experiences she’s had behind the decks and in organizing spaces have begun to meld as she has explored bringing music into the organizing space and weaponizing audio for disruption
Nick Boyd:
Between his own DJing and his work behind Sorry Records, Nick Boyd has become something of a staple of the New York’s club circuit. Behind the boards, he pairs old-school house and techno sounds with a more new-school kitchen-sink mentality. He plays with reverence but without idolatry, paying homage to his favorite scenes without tying himself to them.
A hopeless devotee and passionate fixture of the New York City rave underground, Nick is the founder of beloved Brooklyn based DIY label Sorry Records which has been putting out records from a wide variety of stand out folks from the American dance music underground for over in half a decade now.
Nick is a long time resident on both The Lot Radio and 8 Ball Radio and has contributed mixes to Honcho Podcast, Rinse FM, and Spontaneous Affinity. He currently runs a monthly Sorry Records residency at Brooklyn techno institution Bossa Nova Civic Club and has played everywhere from Nowadays to North Carolina’s Slingshot Festival, Good Room to beloved Pittsburgh queer rave Jellyfish, FOURTH WORLD to long running Boston-based house music institution Social Studies, as well as made multiple appearances at The Carry Nation’s legendary residency party in NYC. Nick also occasionally writes about music and interviews artists for Love Injection, Crack Magazine, The Fader, and Bolting Bits.
Naeem:
Dancefloor denizen Naeem joins the night to add in his signature blend of spice and herbs. Don't miss him on opening and closing duties.
We hope to see U on the dance floor.
