Shakespeare's R&J, A Queer Adaptation of Romeo & Juliet, Hosted at City Theatre
From May 8-10, a queer adaptation of Romeo & Juliet comes to City Theatre in the South Side. Shakespeare’s R&J takes the audience through an act of resistance, unveiling whether it is better to remain silent– or take control of your own voice.
The play follows four boys living under rigid constraints that dictate what they can and cannot read. In an act of rebellion and curiosity, they begin to act out one of the forbidden texts: Romeo and Juliet. What begins as playful experimentation quickly deepens into something more revealing. Through Shakespeare’s language, the boys uncover hidden desires, vulnerabilities, and truths.
This production features a collaboration of alumni and current students of the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama and Heinz College Master of Arts Management program in the cast and creative/production teams. J. Cody Spellman, John Wells MFA Directing Fellow, serves as director.
