Haunted by a mysterious woman with a brown paper bag for a head, acclaimed guitarist Kirsten Carey created Throwaway, a post-punk band that acrobatically leaps around virtuosic riffs and unexpected rhythms. Throwaway’s electric energy is “absolutely brilliant” (Soundsphere), with “aerodynamic rock-grit flavors of the likes of Primus or Deerhoof” (eCurrent). The masked namesake of the band is surreally represented in performances through live visuals.
In 2019, Throwaway released their debut album, WHAT?, to widespread acclaim, snagging spots on international year-end lists from the likes of Ghettoblaster Magazine, Tinnitist, and Organ Thing. Throwaway's unique take on rock and their memorable music videos have earned them press in the Metro Times, Post Trash, Soundsphere Magazine, Tinnitist, and more. Throwaway's follow-up EP, Hand That Takes, was released in 2022 by FPE Records, which It's Psychedelic Baby Magazine celebrated as "a pissed-off, burnt-out, and checked-out soundtrack to the Great Resignation."
Throwaway has had two music videos chosen as official selections of the prestigious Ann Arbor Film Festival - “I Work!” (2020) and “Kyubabe” (2023), with the latter winning in competition.
Throwaway has toured widely across the USA, Canada, Europe, and Japan, headlining venues such as The Empty Bottle (Chicago), El Club (Detroit), the Bootleg Theater (LA), Alphaville (NYC), Kung Fu Necktie (Philadelphia), Namba Bears (Osaka), ERA (Tokyo), GROWLY (Kyoto), Utero (Fukuoka), and Fontaine Palace (Latvia). They have opened for acts such as Deerhoof, Fucked Up, Amyl and the Sniffers, The Flying Luttenbachers, Evicshen, and Circuit Des Yeux. Band leader Kirsten Carey has additionally collaborated with musicians such as clipping., Tyshawn Sorey, and Elliott Sharp.
Throwaway is currently recording their third album, an hour-long rock opera, with producer and engineer Chris Koltay (Deerhunter, The War On Drugs).
