Together, we can launch peace! Gather with Assemble makers in partnership with 59th Carnegie International artist, Daid Roy and Black NASA. We will find experimental flight and float into the future with a constellation of imagination, care, creativity, and possibilities that are out of this world. Under the sky and guided by exploration, live outer space soundscapes in collaboration with Daid Roy are performed by trē seguritan abalos, How Things Are, Petra Floyd, and BusCrates.
Begin the day from noon to 1 p.m. for our Water Rocketry Workshop led by Daid Roy, with Launch Window from 1 to 1:15 p.m. Assemble makers will continue with drop-in stomp rockets, space helmets and fashion, and outer space creation from noon to 5 p.m.
About the Artists
Daid Roy (born 1986, Los Angeles, CA; lives in Los Angeles, CA) is a conceptual artist whose work circulates through sculpture, photography, painting, sound, performance, and technology. In 2016, Roy conceived of BLACK NASA, now commonly known as Black NASA. The space agency is a reification of the commitment to the use of rockets for peaceful purposes only. The artist is most excited to share their rocketry expertise and the Black NASA ethos through teaching and youth mentorship. Black NASA’s mission is to conduct rocket science through The 7 Noble Ideals of Human Space Exploration: Challenge, Creativity, Courage, Ingenuity, Peace, Unity, and Discovery. Daid received their BFA from Otis College of Art and Design (2013) and an MFA in sculpture from Yale University (2020). They are a Los Angeles Nomadic Division Mohn grantee (2024) and Yucca Valley Materials Lab Experimental Residency awardee (2025). Roy has lectured and taught youth workshops at the University of California, Los Angeles; Forge Project in Taghkanic, New York; and in community spaces throughout Los Angeles.
Assemble envisions a world where learning and creating are transformative experiences and where all people are equipped with the tools to make a difference, together. We use learning as a tool to create a more equitable future for youth and learners in the Pittsburgh region and beyond. We build confidence through making; connect learners, makers, technologists, and artists; and nurture agency in learners. We provide Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) learning experiences through a culturally relevant and constantly responsive lense though programs in schools, community organizations, and our studio-gallery space in the Penn Avenue Arts District.
